Objective- Demonstrate the skill in naval rope work and boat handling
Pass or have passed the Boatswain’s mate badge
Be able to do the under mentioned
Eye splice
Turk’s Head
Chain splice
Be able to point a rope(any method) and apply West Country and Sail Maker’s whipping
Know the different kinds of purchase tackle and rig a “Handy Billy”
Be proficient in pulling a boat, canoe or sailing dinghy
SI-3(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JI-3-Canoeist )
Objective: - Demonstrate the Knowledge & skill in handling canoes, repairing them, skill in organizing canoe camps.
Pass or have passed the Canoeist Badge
Demonstrate paddling technique in moving water, including ferry glides facing up and down stream, and some other special strokes, such as sweep, sculling and J stroke.
Have a general knowledge of canoeing waterways, and a general understanding of right of way, grading of difficulty, and sources of information.
Know what equipment is needed for a canoe- camping expedition and how to stow them. Take a party in a canoe camping expedition of 20 -30 KM on inland waterways, with two nights camping.
SI-2 2(Corresponding badge for under 14 Yrs 6 months JI-2 Oarsman)
Objective:- Show basic skill in leading a boat’s crew
Pass or have passed the Oarsman badge
Show a knowledge of different types of local craft
Be able to identify parts of a rowing boat, motor boat, and a life boat
Be able to lead a crew of a boat, and be able to get the boat under way and come along side of another craft or jetty etc..
Be able to anchor correctly and also make fast to a Buoy.
Make a form of a sea anchor from available material in the boat, whilst hove to, and understand its use in an emergency.
tDiscuss the rules of road at sea and have a thorough knowledge of any local hazards peculiar to the local sailing waters
