SC-1(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JC-1- Reader)
Objective: - Demonstrate the love for reading, and how reading helps to understand the culture and the history of Sri Lanka & other countries
Supply the examiner previous to the test with a list of at least 18 books that he has read during the previous 12 months. The list should include some standard literary works, at least one book on the culture, or the history of Sri Lanka or the culture or history of a particular area in Sri Lanka, at least one book on a national heroes of Sri Lanka and also a novel by a foreign author where he could learn about the culture etc. of that country. Discuss with the examiner these books explaining why he selected these books. Answer any questions that the examiner may ask based on the contents of these books
Write his own review of a book lent to him by the examiner
Explain how he selects which books to read, and understand the facilities which exist in his locality for obtaining books
Demonstrate how books should be cared for by producing some of his own books
SC-4(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JC-4- Scribe)
Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in written communications, taking down minutes of a meeting, and a basic knowledge in book keeping
Have good handwriting
Write an official letter to his District Commissioner or school Principal on a simple subject given by the examiner
Write a reply to a letter given verbally by the examiner
Have an elementary knowledge of double entry system of book keeping
Prepare the minutes of a meeting, particulars of which would be given by the examiner
Have maintained his Log book satisfactorily.
SC-3(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JC-3-Scholar)
Objective: - Demonstrate the skill in academical work and some form of leadership in other extra and co- curricular activities such as clubs and societies
Pass or re-pass the Scholar Badge.
Show evidence that he regularly reads at least three standard periodicals of educational value and be able to answer questions on them, which the examiner may ask.
Show evidence that he is a member of a school or public library, and regularly visits it for the purpose of reading or reference.
At the time of the test he should have been holding one of the following offices for at least six months
A school prefect
A school monitor
A president or a vice president of a club or association
A secretary or assistant secretary of a club or an association
A student librarian or a senior officer of a library or any other office that the examiner is satisfied with
SC-2(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – JC-2- Speaker)
Objective: - Be able to Demonstrate basic rules in conducting a meeting and taking part in a debate
Demonstrate the duties of a chairman by taking the chair at a meeting
Speak on a prepared subject to an audience of not less than 10 people, speech to last not less than 10 minutes
At five minutes’ notice
Prepare a vote of thanks
Make an impromptu speech of 3 to 5 minutes duration on a subject(Choice of three allowed)
Know the ordinary rules of debate and have taken a leading part in not less than five debates or set discussions.
SC-5(Corresponding badge for under 14Yrs 6 months – None)
Objective: - Be able to show a fairly good skill in two languages other than the Scout’s own.
Be able to type at a speed of 30 w.p.m. in English or 20w.p.m. in Sinhala or Tamil
Have a good knowledge of Microsoft Word or a similar application
Type accurately the following
A normal business letter to a merchant
A statement of accounts ( one A4 sheet)
The minutes of a meeting (one A4 sheet)
This could be done on a type writer or on a computer.
(SC-7) (Corresponding badge for under14 1/2 Junior Journalist -JC-7)
Objective: - Be able to express himself /herself sufficiently fluently in any accepted form of mass media
Pass or have passed the journalist badge
Discuss with the examiner the best method of giving publicity to an event names by the examiner
Submit to the examiner a written report of a Scout meeting that could be published in a children’s page of a newspaper
Discuss with the examiner news report (either written/ a newspaper cutting or verbal from radio TV or you tube) high lighting weak and the strong point in that.
For any Scout who is weak in writing, the examiner could give the under mentioned option at his/ her discretion.- Take a photograph of good quality and submit it to the examiner with a good caption.
